Fall Semester (6 credit hours): Anth 6330: Principles of Applied Anthropology (3 credits) This course covers the practice of applied anthropology through study of techniques and approaches in applied research and evaluation, policy analysis, advocacy, planning, and management. Select one of the following courses: Anth 6322: Seminar in Medical Anthropology (3 credits) This course covers the analytical frameworks of medical anthropology, these being: the relations between practitioners and their patients, the choice of care in the biomedical system and alternative healing systems, and the importance of politics, economy, environment, social structure and culture in shaping health, illness, and health care. Anth 6333: Seminar in Families and Communities (3 credits) This course covers case studies and approaches in the study of leadership, coalition building, models of development and theories of social organization, family organization, ethnicity, and social class. Spring Semester (6 credit hours): Anth 6380: Field Methods (3 credits) This course covers qualitative methodologies, the modeling of data according to decision making and social arrangements, the analysis of data, and the relatedness of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Anth 6325: Computer Based Applications for Statistical and Qualitative Treatment of Data in Applied Anthropology (3 credits) This course covers computer applications for data analysis, the uses of software for textual treatment of data, scaling of data, analysis of variance and probability, measures of incidence, prevalance and risk, and calculations of costs and benefits. Summer (6 credit hours): The Practicum The practicum is the capstone experience of the program in which the student develops a project of his or her own interest and carries out an applied field project that addresses the concerns of an agency, private enterprise, government, community, or similar entity. This may be completed at the place of current employment. The student enrolls for six credits for the practicum and the experience is guided by two or three faculty members at the University of Houston and an on-site mentor at the performance site. There are opportunities for fellowships for international work. |
